Panda Class Blog 19th February 2025

Dear Panda Families,

We hope you are all keeping well and enjoying the warmer weather and sunshine!

It was lovely to meet with so many of you last week for our Parent Teacher Conferences.

We'd like to say a huge thank you to our Storytellers who have been visiting us in the morning and afternoon classes on Thursdays. The children love having guests in and are enjoying the stories you read to us. We look forward to welcoming more of you in the coming weeks!

Our new Unit of Inquiry, 'How The World Works,' is getting off to a great start.  We are doing many scientific experiments, such as discovering how the water cycle works using 'clouds' made out of shaving foam to illustrate this and zip-loc bags filled with water.

Rise Wise Dogs was a very successful incursion for the children, and many of the Pandas felt comfortable patting Mia, the kind and patient therapy dog who came to visit us! We learnt how to approach a dog by patting its back, and we learnt that dogs are allergic to chocolate and grapes. We also saw Mia perform some tricks!

Yesterday, Curiosity Kids was brilliant for the children, and they learnt about colour mixing using pipettes and test tubes. The Pandas followed the instructions very well and especially loved the final experiment of making their very own volcano!

We're going to complete the week by learning about designing/making clothes for our toy Pandas and learning what types of materials are 'rough' and which are 'smooth'.

Construction with 'Make Do' has been extremely popular, and we have been delighted with how well the children can plan their ideas on paper or whiteboards before constructing. This is something we have talked about and it's fantastic to see the Pandas collaborating together and sharing their ideas.

We helped the 3 Little Pigs cross a river by working together and making a bridge. Firstly, we looked at famous bridges around the world to get inspiration for this, and together, both classes created a successful bridge!

Yesterday, we conducted an experiment using Skittles! We tested what happened when we put Skittles in milk and added a drop of dishwashing liquid in the middle of the tray. The results are always fascinating and we hope we've inspired the Pandas with this favourite demonstration of chemical changes and colour mixing. Some of the children were able to make predictions about what they thought would happen such as "they will melt" and "they're going to get smaller."

Here are some books we have read recently, linking topics we are discussing in the classroom such as different materials and planning:

We look forward to seeing you on Sports Day this Friday!

Save the Date: K1 Excursion to Pamela Peck Discovery Space in March

The K1 children will be visiting the Pamela Peck Discovery Space on an educational excursion.

10 Mar (Monday) - Dolphin & Frog class

13 Mar (Thursday) - Monkey & Panda class

The trip is designed to support the learning goals of multiple Units of Inquiry this year, broadening their opportunities for various play and interactions with new materials and spaces. The excursion will also support their upcoming unit on 'How the World Works' as there are many different play areas at Pamela Peck to encourage children to experiment and explore.

We kindly request that one parent or caregiver accompany each child. Your presence will offer unique perspectives that align with your child's interests, making learning more meaningful and engaging. By helping to connect their learning to their personal experiences, you can support your child in deepening their understanding.

We will share more details about the trip, including logistics and consent forms, after the Lunar New Year break. We look forward to this exciting learning opportunity!
